Trip on January, 14th 2012
This tour has been recognized by the Estonian Ecotourism Association with the quality sign Estonia - the Natural Way.
This adventure takes you to the westernmost part of Saaremaa, to Vilsandi National Park. It is the oldest nature protection area in both the Baltics and Russia, founded in 1910. You will see one of the oldest and biggest Estonian country churches (13th c.), where from the spire you can admire the view to the surrounding coastal area, including several lighthouses. The bell tower of Kihelkonna church is unique in the Baltic States (17th c.) and stands just next to the church.
Next, transfer to the Harilaid peninsula via ancient village roads. Here you leave the car and start hiking along the unspoiled coastline to the tip of the peninsula, reaching the lighthouse of Kiipsaare (1933). Along the way to the lighthouse you enjoy the marvellous views. You'll hear and learn about the nature and wildlife of the Estonian islands and the lifestyle of the islanders.
Due to strong winds and the erosion of sea waters the lighthouse, formerly built on dry land, now stands right in the sea and is leaning over towards the waters. You can enjoy a light picnic and relax, and swim in summer. The second half of the hike takes you back to the starting point along the eastern coast of the Harilaid peninsula. A lake lies just next to the sea, only sandy dune divides two. The environment of this coast is completely different from the western coast, instead of pine woods and pebbles here you'll walk on sandy dunes full of protected plants.
